1) Oyibo Princess
A young British actress is quickly establishing herself as one of Nigeria’s most popular movie stars. Claire Edun, dubbed “Oyinbo (white) Princess” by her growing legion of followers in Nigeria and the wider African diaspora, is leveraging her love of African culture and pidgin English to help Nollywood gain a wider audience.
Edun was exposed to Nigerian culture while growing up in London’s Peckham neighborhood, which is home to a large community of African expats. Her friends introduced her to Nollywood films, and she quickly picked up the pidgin dialect – a combination of English, local African languages, and street slang – featured in the films. She had always loved acting and drama, and she had even performed in local theatre performances while still in high school.
She speaks more Pidgin and lipsyncs the Benin language so well that her followers applaud her and wonder how she does it anytime she wears Nigerian clothing and speaks the language.
